These pictures were from my first night in Taiwan. It's of a "night market" that was located about 5 minutes from the hotel. (The place we stayed at was sitting on top of a small mountain / hill, so it wasn't really walkable ... unless you enjoy navigating steep steps and damp walkways in 90 degree weather.) The night market operates at dawn (7pm) till midnight, 7 days a week. It's so hot during the day that most of the shopping happens when the sun goes down.
Here's the indoor portion of the night market.

Imagine a location the size of half a Wal-Mart filled with food vendors. It was a good 15 by 10 grid of booths. 2 walls were open air, the other 2 had large exits.
Under the roof ...

It was like the vegas strip in there. I've never seen so many signs, yet alone indoors. Anywhere else in the world this would be a fire waiting to happen, but over there ... it looks like it's been fine for years.
A 4-pack of steamed pork buns the size of a racket ball ran about $1. Noodles and other sides, about $1. You could stuff a group of 4 for under $5.
Walking down the street adjacent to the indoor section ...

Scooters are everywhere. If you ride one of those, you're also treated like garbage by cars and cabs. They'll turn right into you, so scooter riders can never get lazy while riding.
Again, signs everywhere. If you want to own a business in Asia, look into this.
Down an alley off the main street ...

Both sides of the street are filled with shops. The middle of the road is packed with vendors. The shops offer legit goods while the vendors offer knockoffs.
The vendors have their merchandise on roll-away carts, flat suitcases, or fold-able tarps. Their goods are knocked off, so they need a fast way to pack and unpack in case of police raid.
Speaking of which, at the end of the alley was a police station. The cops know the vendors operate out of there 7 nights a week till midnight ... it's just that they don't care most of the time. It looks like they only do busts when forced to.
