Get one of those fogless mirrors to put up in the shower. I find my best, closest, comfortable shaves are done in the shower. Lather-up after soap and shampoo, when your skin and facial hair have softened up.

For aftershave try some witchhazel. It's got a clean scent to it and not overly powerful perfumy smelling like most aftershaves. Or if you like that burn/cool feeling use SkinBracer.
