The first manual car I had (95 Civic Ex) came with a short shifter; it wasn't until I had my GSR that I noticed how long the throw is in the stock shifter, I just became accustomed to the short throws. The first thing I replaced was that shifter with this B&M short shifter for less than $45:

BUT, it wasn't until I purchased a weighted Skunk2 shift knob that I had the best shifting experience ever. I let my close friends drive my car, and they've all purchased this exact same setup. I think I've recommended this more than anything I've bought for my car.
B&M short shifter $45 + Skunk2 shift knob $55 = Awesome shifting experience.
