The compressor uses a clutch to engage. My bet is the clutch is worn and needs replacement. Only the A/C compressor runs off the A/C belt, so it is perfectly safe to cut it to temporarily fix the problem.

I would recommend fixing the compressor clutch before it gets too much warmer.
