If you want to keep the factory stereo and still run amplified speakers, its really not that hard. Buy some aftermarket speakers and an amp that will give them some good power. All you need is high to low level converters. These will take the factory speaker wires from the back of the head unit and convert them to the RCA jacks that plug into the amp.
