I am currently interviewing for positions in midtown Manhattan. I don't own a car (haven't for almost two years) and do not wish to add that expense. Commuting time is a big thing for me because where I currently live in Philly, I am a 15 minute walk to my office. As long as I have something similar to that via the subway, I am cool.

People have told me I am best to live south of 100th St in Manhattan, and the Queens / Brooklyn neighborhoods I previously mentioned. I am not afraid of fringe areas, but would prefer not to live in one.
