Because if you have a stuck caliper slider, the caliper piston would have to move out more than it has to and cause the pedal to have a softer feel and it would feel like you need more pedal travel to get brakes.

When I'm at work and i have a car with a softer than normal pedal, thats the first thing I go to after I look at the reservior.
