it screws up the surface tension required to get a clean wipe with a blade. it should only be used on glass surfaces that don't have wipers (side windows, back window, mirrors)

there is also a hydro-phobic effect, rain-x creates perfect water beads. these beads act like lenses and can cause major glare.
