Con Edison, the Fire Department and multiple city agencies are investigating the source of a natural gas odor throughout Manhattan this morning.
Hundreds of reports of the smell began flooding the 911 system around 9 a.m. in parts of Manhattan and New Jersey.
The Jersey City mayor's office said officials there were told the odor was due to a possible gas leak at Bleecker Street and West 4th Street in Greenwich Village.
Early reports indicated that the odor is widespread throughout Manhattan, from Battery Park City to Upper Manhattan, and in various parts of New Jersey.
Some buildings throughout the city have reportedly been evacuated. PATH train service has been suspended between Hoboken and 33rd Street and service between Journal Square and 33rd Street. There is normal service from New Jersey to the World Trade Center station.
The New Jersey Transit website says that they will cross-honor PATH 33rd St. Line customers at Newark, Secaucus and New York Penn Station.
