To add to what Dub said it also is a high rev motor kind of like the Chevy 327 is to the 350. so not only can you squeeze mad power out on a budget but you can (with a lot of work) wrap that sucker up to the 10k range and not blow the piss out of it.
Yeah, put in some good heads/cam/valvetrain and upgrade the block...and you have a nice displacement spinner on your hands. Although the newer DOHC modular motors rev even higher.

Yeah I always liked driving my buddy's 92 GT. Basic mods...gears, bolt ons, head and cam...was still quick.
