It might not be a bad idea when you're in a bit of a tight spot, like trying to slow the car down via the tranny in snow/ice (even then, not super effective), but as said, I wouldn't make a practice of it. Heck, I rarely downshift even with a manual. Brake pads/rotors are easier replaced than clutches.
