Dude just so you know, a martini is made with gin.

A vodka martini is a permutation therof, and really the only acceptable one since all this other "martini" crap is a bastardization of the term just because it's a foofy girly drink shaken in a cocktail shaker and served in a cocktail glass.

If you want something easy and whatnot, a good introduction is the traditional Stoli martini which is 2 measures Stoli vodka and 1 measure of vermouth. Pour it over 1 olive and yer good to go, classic old skool vodka martini. A vodka martini is of course, distinct from an actual martini which is made with gin.

There is an increasing trend to assume that vodka is the prevailing and/or originating spirit upon which the martini is based. This is however, a complete fallacy based solely on the fact that all the foofy girly drinks that are passed off as "martinis" tend to be based upon the neutral-tasting vodka rather than gin.

I personally drink a martini that is 3 measures Bombay Sapphire gin and 1 measure Martini & Rossi extra dry vermouth, shaken with enough ice that the outside of the shaker frosts over, and poured into a chilled glass, over a couple of particularly good olives (for example the Santa Barbara sun dried tomato stuffed variety mentioned earlier).
