so after owning a PS3 for 24 hours...
I thought I'd write a review about the system and it's games...
...and I got bored of it real quick. Here's why:
The System:
When I first pulled it out, I noticed that it was pretty heavy which is understandable since the AC power adapter is built into the system. After plugging everything in, I booted up the system by pressing the touch sensitive power button and the system whirred and came to life. On the screen you have to set up your default system set up (time, time zone, etc) and it welcomes you with a short orchestrated tone. The menu is pretty straight forward and PSP owners will feel right at home. The system is definitely quieter than my Xbox 360 but in terms of features, the Xbox 360 wins hands down.
The internet browser was pretty cool and it's very similar to the PSP's net browser. It lacks a built-in Macromedia Flash Player 8, thus watching streaming videos is impossible.
The system is capable of running at 1080p but most software developers are choosing to go with 720p because most people can't afford a 1080p HDTV. IGN .com mentioned something about that too and they seemed pretty unimpressed.
The Controller:
Was Sony trying to make the controller clear? The paint is so thin on the controller that if you look at it hard enough, you can see through it (where the D-Pad and the face button are located). The plastic that they used for the controller has cheap feel to it compared to the PS2's Dual Shock 2. The built-in motion sensor doesn't work because it only works on one known game so far (Warhawk) that's not even out yet. The force feedback feature will be truly missed.
My point: This controller is definitely not worth $50 +
Blu-Ray:
I played "Talladegga Nights" that came with the system on the PS3's Blu-Ray player. I have the PS3 hooked up via Monster Component cables, running at 720p, optical output on my Pioneer 5.1 receiver w/ SVS Sound speakers, and a 42 inch Samsung DLP HDTV.
Did I notice a difference? Not really.
Not worth $30 for the Blu-Ray DVD or the extra $$$ for having a built-in Blu-Ray functionality.
Games:
We got a copy of Resistance: Fall of Man and I got bored with it real quick. It's like a ramped up Call of Duty w/ Aliens (or mutated people) instead of Nazis. Nothing too revolutionary in terms of eye candy, effects or sound.
I was pretty bored and unimpressed with the system so I went to my local Wal-Mart and picked up a copy of Gears of War. I've been playing that for the past 5 hours while my PS3 sat idle and collecting dust.
Cliff Notes: Don't waste your money on the PS3. Wait until next year.
