It's actually not all that uncommon for animals to be born with occasional vestigial limbs or organs suggesting prior ancestry. Hell, humans are sometimes born with a larger-than-normal coccyx (aka a tail), and we all have appendicies and wisdom teeth as well.

Also, a small bit of the human population is also born with a second toe that's longer than the big toe. Another throwback that pops up every once in a while too.
