THE OFFICIAL I test drove an E36 M3
1997 black/black 4-door 5-speed with 142k miles. Had the premium and sport packages. They wanted $11k for it.
Wasn't really impressed. Fun car, but the high speed stability wasn't really impressive and cornering wasn't all that great even though they claimed it had new struts. No real service records to be seen, and the guy had no idea who had owned it before. Dealership/salesman were spectacular...it's a small luxury-only dealer like 5 miles east of flint. Salesman used to professionally race E30 M3's in Europe and said that if I bought a car there he'd let me use the lift when it was open and would give me his advice (he knows everything about BMWs) and help if I wanted it.
Interior was also pretty beat up...the wood trim had taken a beating. Transmission was pretty awful...there was at least 2 inches of lateral play in the shifter while in gear.
Car had several electrical problems - stab control didn't work, ABS didn't work, sunroof didn't work, driver's window didn't work. I can see one of those problems happening or four of them happening seperately, but having all 4 of them at once without them being fixed by the previous owner? Odd.
Engine was spectacular...very smooth, great engine note, but not as fast as I expected. I think that the AV6 6-speed might actually be a bit quicker, and my buddy thought that my car could probably keep up with it on the highway.
Looks like I'll be saving for something closer to $20k :happysad:
