Welcome to the corporate world where it's not your performance that will get you ahead but it's a matter of how well liked you are. You need to brown nose and kiss ass as much as possible even if you don't want to otherwise you're out the door. I've seen way too many compentent and knowledgeable people get canned just because they're not liked or whatever.
