As a general rule, you want 20% or less of the entire page to be Flash, Java, Video etc.

The more you make static HTML, the faster and more simple it'll be. Smoother for more people.

Nothing worse than going to a site and see half of it cause they designed it to be viewed with only one browser on one OS etc.

I'd recommend http://validator.w3.org While you are working on your site, run it through there a few times and make sure it complies. That way you don't have to hear complaints from people not being able to see your site.
