they have their issues, but they're certainly not ticking timebombs. the biggest thing with those things is that they pretty much did not change from when they were introduced in the late 80's to the later models. any problems that existed in the first run were still present years later.
My parents had a 93 wagon with less than 100k miles with the Vulcan and I think the longest time it was continually running properly was maybe a week. They had the HG replaced, WP, a few other things before it finally succumbed to a cracked block. They probably paid about $5000 total to get like 10k miles out of that piece of shit.
