You'll need to network. and network more if you want to succeed in the design field. Everyone I know who landed sucessful jobs in the industry is by recommendation or through design gatherings. Attend shows and gatherings. Visit any talks and shows in the City. That is the best place to network.

AIGA Events are the cream of the crop

There are also local events in san jose and Silicon Valley you'll have to look up.
