3am here and cant sleep, so I'll chime in

I think the reason why many people, including myself at times, aren't happy is simply because we are constantly changing and unsure of what we want out of life. Sure, we all want to make millions, having a stable career, a trophy wife, loving family and great kids. Achievable, yes. But, what do we do once we get there? We're cultured to always want a bit more and not knowing how to simply enjoy the moment, living the moment.
Motivations and goals can be double-edged swords. We've learned to aim and to achieve, but what do you do when you don't get there? What do you do once you get there? What do you do when you're all burned out and have no desire to get "there"?
I've missed out on many things in life by simply thinking a bit too much about the goals and often forget about the road/s getting there. It's probably best just to live and be appreciative.

Easier said than done though.

*no, not high*
