The case itself apart right?
The diff bearings are a press fit into the case and shimmed to control float, if it's apart an inch or so, try putting it back together some and apply even pressure around the case, that should let you get the transmission case halves apart. That is assuming you took the 5th gear stuff apart from the end of the tranny though...
Are you using any kind of manual as a guide?
