Default New Clutch Won't Disengage

New clutch won't disengage

Here's the deal, the car (auto to manual converted 1988 CRX) is staying in gear, clutch does not disengage the motor, even when actuated by hand right at the tranny manually (the cable is not a factor). Also the clutch lever does not go through what I think should be its full range of motion, and I think this is important, it 'clunks' against something earlier than it's maximum travel. Its also quite easy to actuate the clutch manually, only the fork spring (is that the right term?) is providing resistance, it doesn't appear to be pressing against the clutch fingers at all. I know the clutch is not disengaging, if its put in gear, and the clutch fully depresssed, a flick of the key will cause the car to jump forward (yes I know this can burn up the starter, I had to see if the clutch was working at all.) The engine started and ran fine in neutral. The tranny does go through all the gears with the engine off.

The throwout bearing was replaced and appears to be correctly assembled,
using an extra manual tranny for reference as far as how it goes together and actuates, etc.

The clutch was aligned using the appropriate aligning tool.

The clutch mounting bolts were tightened in proper sequence, to proper torque.

Dropped the tranny this weekend to ensure that everything was installed correctly, and I found nothing wrong. The pressure plate is not on backwards. What else should I look for? What other mistakes could have been made?
