Default '89 Teg RS Engine issues

New to the forum, but not to cars.
Picked up my teg several years ago with like 100k miles on it, now have about 162k.
Unfortunatly, I had a connecting rod cap screw back out, so needless to say, engine problems.
I've got the engine out, and basically torn down, but have run in to a couple problems.
1) What have people used to get the valve springs out? I've rented and bought 2 different tools, neither work.
2) How do I get the crank pulley off? I know the Haynes/Chilton manuals say there supposed to be torqued to like 83 ft/lbs, and someone here has said 175 ft/lbs. Well my Impact won't back it off, neither will a 2 ft extension on the 3/8 ratchet (which broke in the process).
Any help would be appreciated. Also, any good sources for parts, rebuild kits etc... There seems to be alot of info on the 90 and newer tegs, much less for the gen 1 stuff. Thanks
