The old refrigerant contained CFC's, which were outlawed years ago. But relieving the pressure in the system has a very small chance of working. the car is almost 10 years old, so just take it to a shop and have them service it. Like I said, it's inexpensive, and it doesnt take that long. If you know anyone who does it have them do it... my buddy did it for 20 bucks.
