Me and a friend eventually got them both off, but it took him sitting on the brakes and me jumping up and down on a breaker bar. (all 200lbs of me!) So they finally came loose. Then you just have too loosen everything that the haynes manual says and pull it out, grease the new one and slide it in. I had to use a rubber mallit and gently bump them into the transmission. Just make sure you dont abuse the actual cv asembly to much. The first side I did took about 3 hours, the second once i knew what all I was really doing took 1.5hrs. Let me know if you need any farther instruction.
Sounds like you just changed the axles?
That's what I would recommend as well, just swap out the whole axles, much easier and you can get re-man axles for $60-75.
As for the axle nut, you risk breaking the breaker bar and hurting yourself doing that. What I like to do (after applying penetrating oil or BP Blaster) is just put a little tension on the breaker bar, then begin tapping the breaker bar about midway up the bar with a small 4-5lbs sledge, this will eventually break it loose and is much safer.
