In this image the red thing on the rim is a rock ring, it keeps the bead from getting damaged and helps you slide across the rocks insted of catching the lip on it.
A beadlock is what it sounds like it locks the bead in place like a clamp. When you get on the rocks or are climbing you will sometimes slip the bead which loses traction and tears up the bead of the tire. Also we run at about 4-8 pounds of air when we are crawling, at that air pressure it is easy to peel the bead off the rim, basically it will remove the tire from the rim. So you use bead locks to solve that and can run down to zero pressure if your rig is light enough. A lot of Samurai guys actually remove the stems from their tires depending on what kind of tire they are running.
