It only makes that cool sound if you shift really fast, and without using the clutch or lifting off the gas, if it makes a loud grinding sound and doesn't go into gear that means you aren't shifting hard enough or fast enough, don't be afraid to throw you whole body into the shift, maybe even two hands.
