You forgot one really important thing they always teach you in driving school: The order of a police officer trumps all posted or prima facie motor-vehicle regulations, all signs and all traffic signals. If the cop ordered you out of the breakdown lane, then you leave the breakdown lane. The sign means nothing. If a cop points and you and then to the left, then guess what? You turn left.
And for whoever asked: Passing on the right is legal in Massachusetts on a one-way street or a divided highway, or when a car ahead of you is turning left.
