I have a '98 Civic DX with 363,450 on it and changed the oil every 6-10K using regular oil and filters (whatever Jiffy Lube put on-usually Purolators). Had an oxygen sensor failure at 272,500 and, long story short, had to have the head gasket and catalyst replaced just in case......but during the repair the service advisor called me out to the shop and showed me the engine torn down. Both he and the tech asked what maintenance schedule I followed because they could not believe how clean and pristine the engine was--they even asked if I had ever replaced the engine because they had never seen a high-mileage engine in such great shape. When I told them that it was every 6-10K they were just astounded and said, "Well it is a Honda after all...."
Bottom line.....change oil whenever it starts to get dark and my advice is to change filters every oil change (not every other like Honda recommends). Brand, in my experience, makes no difference. I am still driving this car today, and it runs like new and uses no oil whatsoever.
BTW, I also have an '01 Accord EX with 150,600 on it and have been running regular Mobil 1 in it.....seems to last about 8K before it darkens. No problems out of this Honda either.....
