Any interference engine that goes into redline for a minute is going to do that, depending on how far into redline it goes. Ever heard of valve float? Should it have done that? No. that's the one thing I don't like about VW's is their Drive-by-wire system, I prefer a throttle cable over an electronic sender.

70k in 2yrs on my vw, no major issues, just a bad turn signal relay(hazard switch). My friend had a 2002 GTI that was modded to high hell and driven very hard, only problem he had was coil packs, which was fixed under recall.

The problem with VW is the maintenance, it's expensive, ppl start going to local shops to get regular maintenance done. Then non-approved fluids, filters, and sensors are used and the problems begin. I know where to shop to get my approved items and do the maintenance myself with my bentley shop cd.
