Be your own mechanic, bring a compression tester and check the condition of the spark plugs (discoloration) and you'll know enough about the engine
Then check the ball joints.
How much does it cost to take a car to a mechanic and have them "check it out"? My grandfather did that once with a Stanza he bought and the mechanic couldn't find the leaking head gasket that I had to fix last year.
