I'd rather replace 1 part than 2.

I turn off the burners, let them stop. Turn off the tank. then turn on each burner to release the gas pressure. I've been told by the local tank filling place and several seasond BBQ'ers to do this so it causes less wear on the burner valves.

Only takes a few seconds and has never caused a problem.
