You have to take the trunk trim off and get to the trunk latch itself. Taking the latch off isn't that difficult. When the latch is open, there is a metal tab that makes contact with the latching machanism. That metal tab is part of the circuit that turns on your trunk light and dash light. You have to rebend the metal tab to make sure it isn't in contact with the latch mechanism when the latch is closed. If it is in contact, then your lights will stay on and probably drain your battery. I have a 95 Civic coupe. I'm sure that the latches between mine and yours work similarly.
