i would also do a head gasket job. i know it's big, but that's the first point of breaking when boosting. that old gasket is tired, and will not hold boost well.

i would say after a compression test, if it holds, and the needle is steady at idle (once warm) some modest boost (~6) should be okay.

but as everyone mentioned, it's a risky job without a rebuild.
