why new mexico and not AZ? although you should be able to buy a place right off the bat in NM. if you do come to AZ, there are a few of us in the Phoenix area. good luck with the move, if you do the cross country drive the mid west is boring, and after oklohoma city it turns into a dust bowl till you hit New Mexico where the driving is a little more intresting.
