This sounds more like an issue of weak dampers to me.
From what you describe, it sounds like your suspension is bottoming out due to insufficent compression damping.
The understeer issue is a common plight of most front-wheel drive cars. To counter it, you're looking at comprehensive upgrades to the suspension system.. from springs and dampers to bushings and anti-roll bars.
