Fortunately for GM, the Opel Astra is actually a pretty good vehicle, and if GM can quickly "Federalize" the car they could have a very nice compact model to compete against the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.
Not to mention, the Vauxhall Astra VXR is a ready-made replacement for the Ion Redline.
It has 240 hp from a turbocharged Ecotec, hopped up suspension, brakes, wheels, and interior.
The basic 5-door hatch is pretty alright lookin too.
