Bad shoes hurt your back, so won't cheap headers disrespect your motor the same way?
I'v never seen a chrome header break i'v seen them turn black really fast though. i'm interested in your theory of the engine running hotter though. I'v had a chrome header on my 97 civic for about 5 years now and seen no overheating problems, infact the needle only moves when warming up and thats just to the normal operating temp. of course I got a DC Sports on it, and it cost me more the 10.
