oh yeh.. the cheap stuff h:

The finger lakes have some of the best (if not the best) Riesling in the country. So I would start with a nice Riesling from NY. I presonally like white wine better anyway. I also like Vidal Blanc, Pinot Gris (not Pinot Grigio), Niagra, and Chardonnay. Here are some brands to try (in no particular order):

Hermann J. Wiemer (my favorite vinyard and has great Rieslings)
Chateau St. Michelle
Wagner Vinyards
Hazlitt
Lakewood Vinyards
Keuka Overlook
Barrington Cellars
Francis Coppalla (only Cabernet Sauvignon I like)
Zind-Humbrecht (Great Pinot Gris, German I believe)
Columbia Crest (great Chardonnay)

most of the above are NY wines. Like I said NY has great Reisling so I would get one of those...if you want a dessert wine (more alcohol and much sweeter) I would try a Late harvest Reisling, Reisling Ice Wine, Vidal Blanc, Vignoles Ice wine, or Santa Julia - Tardio (if you can find it).

Hope this helps...

P.S. NY Wine > California Wine h:
