While I agree that charcoal tastes better, Gas is soooo much easier to use. I've had both in the past, and if I just want to grill up a burger for myself or a couple of friends, you just light the gas grill & go. With charcoal, you have to light it up and let the thing warm up forever, not to mention storing charcoal and dumping it once you're finished.

Charcoal = great for large parties and extended barbecues
Gas = great for time and ease of use.

Consider buying a grill either through Craislist/classifieds/garage sales. I've bought a decent grill in the past from a garage sale that cost me $20 with a full tank of propane. Sold it 2 years later for $15 with an empty propane tank at another garage sale.
