My brother has an 03 R6 that I've ridden a little. If you just putt around town, it's ok. When it comes to the bike's true potential, you'll want to take it to the track.

Going by yourself isn't always such a bad thing. When starting off, you'll have less pressure to get in over your head. Also, riding solo can be pretty relaxing in a "go anywhere you want" kind of way.

If you choose the bike, going used is good. Unless you don't mind paying more for insurance and maintenance, going small is also a good idea.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of gear too. Search hard enough and you can find some pretty nasty shit online that could have been prevented or lessened if the rider wore protective clothing.

Anyway, it'll probably be easier for you to make your decision after you take the class. Have fun either way.
