my mom had a good one that I still occationally use to this day:

"better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick"

Can be used when you comment on something good or somthing bad. I.E. "I got a D on my test, but its better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick." or "I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to GEICO, thats better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!"
