I don't think most people are bitching about him killing himself. Well at least I wasn't, and I don't think a lot of the regulars are either. It's just neither are very practical for a college student, and he's better off saving his (or his parents') money for paying off college expenses than spending it on a car. Both of which I think are valid points.
