Anything is possible, but it will probably be more effort than it is worth over just paying someone to do it or just replacing it all together.
Even I am scared to death of transmissions, but if I had to, I could probably figure it out.
Start with a Helms manual and see how involved it is. The next hard step is troubleshooting it. If you knew what you were looking for, it would be pretty straightforward, but you don't know what you are looking for, so it just makes it that much more difficult.
