hey man..look a few threads down i have a turbo project im almost done with..you can see the basics of a home made turbo kit..but iv added some things i would like to have but are not needed...like the external wastegate..you could run the stock wastegate ..also i have a front mount intercooler which you also dont have to have..most homemade setups on a budget just use a dsm side mount intercooler..most of my parts are from a dsm which parts are cheap and easy to find...if you do it right you can build a decent kit for under a grand if you can get some deals..mine so far has cost me about 500 bux.
