The check engine light is on because the exhaust temps, pressure, oxygen and CO levels are not within operating parameters. No matter how many times you reset the computer the check engine light will come on untill the converter is replaced - along with whatever else has been damaged as a result thereof. I couldn't tell you what if anything else has been damaged. You need to replace the cat first, then have a diagnostic run to make sure everything else is fine.
