Tell them you need a valve adjustment. It is common and any mechanic would know how to do it. If they don't, turn around and run.

You should find out where the ticking is comming from exactly. To do this, take a long screw driver and put it on various parts of your engine (with it running) and put your ear to the other end. This should help you to locate the location of the ticking.
