A lot of that has to do with where that office was located...
but anyway, am I the only here that believes context matters? I would never just blurt out something like that without knowing that my audience KNOWS ME and knows that I'm actually not a racist at all. I wouldn't want anyone to hear me and assume I hate anybody else when in reality I don't arbitrarily hate others based on race.
Most white people such as myself wont be offended by being called "honkey" or "cracker" because its not really derogatory. I mean, when in history have these terms ever been used against white people in a manner that makes us feel less than human? I would argue never. Those of hispanic or asian decent can definitely argue that the slang terms for their races have been used to humiliate them and make them feel like less of a human.
