If the roads are truly horrid and you want one vehicle to do it all, I'd look at the previous-gen Nissan Pathfinder or its close cousin the X-Terra.

If you do go down this path, you've got to recognize that you're making a serious (and ostensibly permanent) sacrifice in handling, acceleration and braking.

Lastly, the Ford Escape / Mazda Tribute and Land Rover Freelander are at the absolute bottom of my list. The Escape/Tribute have been saddled with recalls and the Freelander is anything but reliable (I've read accounts of transmissions lasting less than 20K).
Thank you, an i agree i would rahter not have to go down this road but honestly i and sick of hitting the bottom on my car on ice, sick on not being able to open my door cause of a snow bank, sick of being affraid of being stuck in snow. If i had a choice i would rather save on gas and keep my teg that i love! but honestly i dont think i can go arorund this anymore.

Thanks alot for you imput, i think the xterra will be the one i will be looking at... but we are ending winter and maybe i would keep my car 1 more summer and enjoy it as much as i can
