I have done a swap in Cali but on a ford ranger. As long as it is from a car (civic, accord, prelude, etc..) and is from the same model year or newer, and you have all the smog equipment on, it will pass at the state ref. So basically, it has to look like it came from the factory even if it didn't. It is not so much the marking on the block, but the equipment attached, mainly smog. My swap was a 02 3.0 into a 99 4 banger. Since the 3.0 was available for my truck that year, my swap was easy, pull it out, drop it in, they even were a little easy on me becuase the the 3.0 for 02 was different in that the intake a few sensors weren't there that the 99 was suppose to have but I made my 3.0 look like how it was suppose to for 02 so they didn't care. Just make it look stock, don't cut corners on the smog and you'll be fine.
